Many years ago, I was perusing a book shelf at a favorite book store, when a unique title caught my eye: “Art and Healing: Using Expressive Art to Heal Your Body, Mind and Spirit.” I picked it out of the crowded shelf and went to the nearest chair. Upon opening the book, I unwittingly invited a defining moment. In the pages, I discovered a kindred spirit, someone who had realized, like I had, the powerful healing qualities of the creative process. I went on to study with the author of that book, Barbara Ganim, making cross-country trips to participate in the much touted Expressive and Creative Arts Program at Salve Regina University.
Over the years, I have developed my own curriculum incorporating art as ritual. In my practice, ritual is defined as — a purposeful gathering where creativity is used to invoke well-being and harmony. I have facilitated creative arts in many community settings: workshops, healing organizations, retirement communities, small businesses and with friends. Always with a focus towards inclusivity for participants, holding space for the creative muse and accomplishing a meaningful and satisfying art piece. |
